Cambridgeshire County Council has approved spending on a Histon & Impington Parish highways improvement project. At the Highways and Transport Committee on Tuesday 1 October members of the Cambridgeshire County Council approved the 2024/2025 round of Local Highways Improvement (LHI) projects. Histon & Impington Parish Council’s proposal was one of four complex projects selected for South Cambridgeshire District.
Our approved bid is for a raised pedestrian crossing at the mouth of Station Road, where it joins Histon High Street. With the addition of ‘KEEP CLEAR’ markings opposite the exit to assist cyclists moving through this junction. This is continuation of a plan for enhancing our High Street for people walking and cycling, which started in 2023 with installation of a similar raised table pedestrian crossing at Brook Close.
Histon’s High Street carries a large amount of vehicle traffic both from within our parish and neighbouring villages of Oakington and Girton. It is also a key pedestrian and cycle route for IVC pupils and families at the primary schools. We believe this project will improve the accessibility and safety of this area for those walking and cycling.

The raised table will assist pedestrians at this crossing, by reinforcing the revised Highway Code rule H2 – turning traffic must give way to pedestrians crossing at side streets, click here

The ‘KEEP CLEAR’ markings will assist cyclists leaving Station Road to access the primary school when traffic is heavy.
Motorists avoiding delay on the main B1049 often choose to use Station Road instead, this impacts on residents walking or cycling along this street. This new arrangement will make Station Road less attractive as a through route as they will have to drive up and over pedestrian space to enter the side street, further improving safety for active travel.
The Parish Council conducted a survey into this proposal ahead of bidding for the 2023/2024 LHI application round. This showed wide support from the community; 84% of respondents approved of the proposal, with close to 80% giving the proposal a score of 5 or 4 out of 5. Senior staff at our local schools additionally supported the proposal.
“[…] this is a very busy crossing point for many of our students and staff who take this route to walk or cycle to College, and who we actively encourage to do so. Any measure to enhance the safety of cyclists and pedestrians would be very welcomed, particularly by our student body.” – Victoria Hearn, Principle, Impington Village College

The project will now enter into a detailed design stage by officers at County Council. This will look at the exact layout, costings and associated issues such as drainage. Followed by a statutory consultation and, we hope, delivery.
The Parish Council are currently conducting a survey into priorities for future LHI applications and is available until midday Tuesday 15th October. Please let us know your priorities for highways improvements, click here.
